Think you are being “clean” when cleaning? Think again. One of the worst discoveries you can make as a mom or momma-to-be is how many unnatural elements you’re being exposed to when trying to be tidy. If you’re used to using many of brand name household cleaners you’re also unknowingly using chemicals and compounds that are harsh on the environment and are hazardous to your health. It’s time to shake up your routine with some natural home remedies. These simple fixes use “clean” kitchen ingredients that you probably already have on hand – meaning they’re healthy for you and your budget. Here are some of my go-to cleaning recipes:
Laundry Detergent
You’ll never go back to buying the expensive gallon jugs after trying this recipe out. This is my family’s everyday detergent, it’s not only green and clean, but once you have the main ingredients you’ll save a few hundred dollars per year on detergent.
- 3 tablespoons Borax
- 3 tablespoons Washing Soda (I use Arm &Hammer brand)
- 2 Tablespoons Blue Dawn Dish Soap or you can use Fels-Naptha Soap (shaved from the bar and heated)
- 5 drops Essential Oil (any scent you prefer)
- Water
Directions: This one’s so easy! Just find a gallon jug and add Borax and Washing Soda. Fill with 2 cups boiling water. Shake vigorously until dissolved. Then add Dawn or Fels soap and essential oils. Fill the jug with cold water until full.
Glass Cleaner
I love this cleaner. It’s simple to make and always leaves the room smelling fresh!
- 1 1/3 cup Water
- 2/3 cup White Vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
- 10 drops Essential Oil (any scent you prefer)
Directions: Put all ingredients into a spray bottle. Shake vigorously before use.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner
This one couldn’t be easier. Just add all ingredients to the toilet bowl. Stir with brush. Let sit 30-40 minutes. Scrub and flush.
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- 1/4 cup Borax
- 1 cup White Vinegar
