Avoid These Toxins in Your Cosmetics

The cosmetics industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products and the effects of these largely unregulated ingredients can be much more than just skin deep. Skin Deep® Mobile app's barcode scanner steers you toward safe products and tells you which products might be a threat to your health.

Our mission to explore products and expose ingredients that are potentially hazardous to your health is on! We think it is essential for women to dig deeper into what they are putting on and in their body. Personal care products, like cosmetics and body care products, come from an unregulated jungle where makers can use and try almost any ingredient without consequence. So, unfortunately it’s your job as a consumer to know what you’re buying and trying.

Shampoos and Conditioners, for instance, contain fragrance, PEG, ceteareth and polyethylene, parabens, isopropyl, butyl and isobutyl. All of these pose serious threats to your health.

Most nail care items like polish and hardeners contain formaldehyde or formalin. Some even contain toluene and dibutyl phthalate. If you are pregnant, skip the pretty polishes all together.

Be smarter about what you place on your body and face. Try purchasing fewer products and buy only after reviewing ingredients first. If that sounds like too much homework, relax. There’s an app for that.

Meet the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep® Cosmetic Database.

EWG Skin Deep App

The Environmental Working Group is what we at Pure Living consider a healthy living watchdog. They are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that uses breakthrough research and education to help drive consumer choice and civic action.

This app does it all. At home, use the Skin Deep® Mobile app’s barcode scanner on your current products and see which ones might be a threat to your health. When you’re at the store, try it on new products. Scan away and see what EWG has to say about the two lip glosses you’re comparing. It logs a history of the products you’ve scanned, saves your favorites, and offers tips that take the guesswork out of shopping for personal care products.

Happy App-ing! And stay tuned for an upcoming article on skin care routines that will help you to honor your body (and the planet) with natural, safe and beneficial products. Plus, we will introduce you to a few companies whose passion for pure ingredients inspires us – and will hopefully inspire you too.

  1. What a helpful and beautiful looking website, Rebecca. I know you’ve been working HARD. I’m impressed. Thank you for doing what you’re doing. That’s adds another person to the list in the world for the cause … a world who needs to know what really going on. I’m on the similar mission, showing people the importance of READING LABELS for both what they put ON their body, as well as what they put IN it via their mouth. You’re my type of good person. Awesome content you have going. Again, thank you!
