Gone are the days when glass and ceramic containers and toys lined the aisles. Top toys are made entirely of plastic materials. And although many stores and markets now have ample “buy in bulk” sections where you are encouraged to bring your own container, you are often stuck with mostly plastic options for every product you purchase.

Stick with these guidelines and follow-up advice about sticking to safer plastic numbers.

  • Don’t buy products made with soft PVC. Check that your shower curtains and toys are not made with soft PVC.
  • Don’t use plastic containers for hot food or drinks. Opt instead for glass or stainless steel.
  • Use glass instead of plastics in the microwave.
  • Tote your own glass or ceramic containers when buying in bulk.
  • Recycle every glass and ceramic container you can get your hands on, just be sure to wash them well after each use.
