Phenol: Phenol is produced from petroleum. It’s major uses involve its conversion to plastics or related materials. Phenol and its chemical derivatives are used for building polycarbonates (plastic), epoxies (glues), Bakelite, nylon, detergents, herbicides and numerous pharmaceutical drugs.
Phenol acts as an antimicrobial agent, deodorant, exfoliant, an external analgesic as well as being a fragrance ingredient.
Phenol is banned or limited for use in cosmetics in Canada. Classified as a known human respiratory toxicant by the EPA.
