SAP also known as Super Absorbent Polymer: A gel made of molecules that hold many more times their own weight in liquid. Commonly used in disposable diapers and sanitary napkins, SAP’s use in tampons was banned in the 80’s because it was linked with an increased risk of toxic shock syndrome.
