Sodium benzoate

Sodium benzoate: Primarily used as a food preservative, also found in a wide range of products including cosmetics, shampoo, body wash, mouthwash, toothpaste, and moisturizers (to name a few). When combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and potassium benzoate (another preservative), sodium benzoate creates benzene, a well-known carcinogen. Researchers have found a link with cancer and ADD.  Research remains inconclusive and long-term studies are needed. Skin Deep score: 1 (We feel that this should be higher, and will not carry products in our store that contain sodium benzoate.) EWG Rating: 3
