The Plastic Within: A $144 Million Mission to Clean Up Our “Inner Environment”

It sounds like a plot from a sci-fi movie: every week, the average person consumes enough plastic to make a credit card. We eat it, we drink it, and we breathe it in. But this isn’t fiction—it’s a biological reality. For the first time, the U.S. government is launching a massive “search and rescue” mission to find, measure, and eventually remove these tiny invaders from our bodies.

Yesterday, ARPA-H (the government’s high-stakes health innovation agency) announced STOMP—the Systematic Targeting Of MicroPlastics. With a $144 million budget, this program aims to create the world’s first definitive toolbox for scrubbing microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) out of human organs.

Why Do We Need a “STOMP” Program?

Plastic doesn’t just disappear; it simply breaks down into microscopic fragments. Scientists have already detected these particles in human lungs, blood, and even the protective plaques in our arteries. Most recently, research has shown that these tiny fragments can cross the blood-brain barrier.

The problem? We are currently “flying blind.”

  • We can’t measure them: We don’t have a standard clinical test to tell you your “plastic burden.”

  • We don’t know the “Which” or “How”: Different plastics (like the PET in water bottles vs. the polystyrene in takeout containers) act differently once they enter your cells.

  • We can’t clear what we can’t see: Without precise measurement, doctors can’t develop safe ways to flush these materials out.


The Hidden Health Toll: What We Know So Far

While the STOMP program is looking for definitive answers, current science has already raised major red flags regarding the effects of MNPs on human health:

  1. Cellular Inflammation and Stress: Microplastics can cause “oxidative stress” in cells, leading to chronic inflammation—a known precursor to cancer and heart disease (Source: Stanford Medicine ).

  2. Chemical Hitchhikers: Plastics often act as “sponges” for other toxins, such as heavy metals and pesticides, delivering them deep into our tissues (Source: Mol Cancer Journal )

  3. Hormonal Chaos: Many plastics contain endocrine disruptors (like BPA or phthalates) that interfere with reproductive health and metabolism.( Source: International  Journal of Molecular Science)


The Two-Phase Solution

Led by Dr. Ileana Hancu and Dr. Shannon Greene, the STOMP program will tackle the crisis in two strategic moves:

Phase 1: Measurement & Mechanism Before we can talk about removal, we need a “gold standard” test. Imagine going to the lab for a routine blood draw and getting a “Plastic Score.” This phase focuses on understanding which organs different plastics migrate to and exactly how they disrupt our biological pathways.

Phase 2: The Clean-Up Once we know where the plastic is hiding and which types are the most toxic, the focus shifts to removal. This involves designing precise, safe interventions—potentially using advanced filtration or molecular “magnets”—to clear these particles from the body without harming healthy tissue.

A New Chapter for Public Health

This program marks a major shift in how we view environmental health. As ARPA-H Director Alicia Jackson and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. noted at the launch, we can no longer separate the health of our planet from the health of our bodies.

By treating microplastics as a measurable medical condition rather than an invisible environmental nuisance, STOMP is giving us a fighting chance to reclaim our internal health from a plastic-filled world.


Action Item: Reduce Your Daily “Dose”

While the government builds the tools for removal, you can lower your current exposure with three simple steps:

  1. Ditch the plastic-containing coffee maker: Heat accelerates the leaching of microplastics. Use glass or stainless steel for hot liquids.

  2. Dust and Vacuum: Many microplastics are airborne (from synthetic carpets and clothes). Regular cleaning with a HEPA filter reduces the “plastic dust” you breathe. Most vacuums are what’s known as bypass, and even though they say they are HEPA they release microplastics into the air. We only found 2 companies that are really HEPA based 100%. Take a look at the Miele brand.

  3. Consider a HEPA air cleaner for your home: We have consistently had good experiences with Austin Air products.
  4. Change the filters in your home to the highest rating that your HVAC system allows. Although not at the HEPA level, it will reduce the overall circulating amount.
  5. Avoid Microwaveable Plastics: Even “microwave-safe” containers can shed millions of particles when heated.

  6. Reduce your use of all plastics overall !!
