Pregnancy is a precious and time not just for the growth and development of the baby but for the mother-to-be as well. New research out of the Max Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine has discovered a new signaling pathway regulating the development of the placenta, the ever-so-important place where the mother supplies baby with nutrients and oxygen. Their recent findings suggest that distress or unrest in this pathway may cause developmental defects of the placenta. And if placental development is impaired there may be growth disorders of the embryo or to life-threatening diseases of the mother.
Researchers hope these findings could help them understand more about placenta developmental abnormalities and related pregnancy disorders in humans.
