Every mom wonders about all the possible hazards that can harm their baby. One of the loudest ones often ringing in mom’s ear is whether the noise baby hears could be harmful. Some noise can be beneficial for your baby in the gestation period. Your voice and soft music, for instance, can be soothing to a baby on board. The harm comes when you don’t know the right vs. wrong kind of sound, and how much your baby can have of each.

A few factors of sound need to be carefully watched during pregnancy and the early months of childhood:

  • Intensity
  • Frequency
  • Duration
  • Periodicity

For example, the intensity at which one hears sound (also know as the hearing threshold) at 27-29 weeks gestation is 40dB (decibels are the measurement for loudness of sound) and at 42 weeks gestation is 13.5dB. Learn more about the development of hearing and how to protect baby’s ears from too much noise.
