Every mom I know dreams about relaxing baths. You know, the ones we don’t get to take anymore. If you do get a chance to soak with bubbles and glittering candlelight, do yourself a favor: skip the scented candles.
According to a recent study, certain scented candles can emit numerous types of hazardous chemicals, such as benzene and toluene, that can cause damage to the brain, lungs, and central nervous system.
The 2009 South Carolina State University report noted that non-scented, non-pigmented and dye-free candles containing petroleum-based paraffin wax can cause reactions like asthma attacks and migraines.
“While the vegetable-based candles didn’t produce any potentially harmful pollutants, paraffin candles released unwanted chemicals into the air.”
While the effects can vary depending on how often you use them, they also vary depending on the user. According to the research, “For some people the effects are severe, but others may not realize they are being affected until they gradually develop health issues.”
All the research suggests that you should avoid fragrance-filled candles, and instead opt for a soy candle alternative. The Huffington Post generated a list of safe and healthy candles for your home.
