Only in your first trimester, but already beginning to dread gaining those extra pounds? Relax. Baby is growing and your body is boldly preparing you for the long months of pregnancy with a pretty major finale. If you’re like me, you’re likely experiencing early doubts about how many of those added post-baby pounds you’ll be able to shed.

The key to a fit pregnancy is maintaining your routine through as much of the first trimester and gradually making adjustments along the way. If you already have a favorite fitness routine, keep it up! If not, the editors at The Women’s Health Big Book of Exercises recommend following this fitness regimen for optimal results. But take it one day at a time and remember to be mindful of how your body and your baby feel after each session. And, as always, make sure you consult your obstetrician before you engage in any physical activity.

  • Strength Workout: three days a week, resting at least one day between each session. Try lifting weights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Cardio Workout: three times a week, on the days in between your Strength Workouts. So you might do your cardio sessions on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • Prior to each Strength Workout, complete the First Trimester Warm-up
