It’s official: summer is finally here. Pull out the BBQ, invest in new swimming apparel and, if you haven’t already, indulge in all 31 flavors of ice cream. The constant pull to get in the sun during summer is addicting – it’s built that way. Everyone, especially pregnant women, needs an adequate dose of Vitamin D from the sun’s rays. But a recent study shows pregnant women aren’t doing their fair share of basking in the sun.

According to a study on pregnant women in the countries you dream of living in (think Spain, Italy and Greece), women aren’t getting sufficient amounts of Vitamin D. In fact, deficiency of Vitamin D in these Mediterranean countries occurs in up to 90 % of pregnant women.

This is a stunning statistic. And because Vitamin D deficiencies may leave pregnant women at greater risk of various problems and complications, both for themselves and their babies, it has doctors rethinking strategies on Vitamin D supplementation.
